Initial project requirements

Bryant Building Contractors Pty Ltd were tasked with building a new General Learning Centre at Wilsonton State High School in Toowoomba. Yet they had a problem.

The mechanical plant equipment was predicted to create unnecessary background noise and be disruptive for classes in the building.

Flexshield worked with Bryant to supply and install an acoustic louvre enclosure that would silence the mechanical plant equipment.

The solution

Flexshield manufactured and installed Sonic 200 Series acoustic louvres to create an acoustic enclosure, including double louvre gates for access, to reduce the noise emitted by the mechanical plant equipment.

The mechanical plant equipment was mounted on a concrete slab sandwiched between a blockwork retaining wall and the undercroft of the building. The louvre modules and support posts needed to be easily installed into this tight space, which had limited access.

The louvres were constructed to withstand the rigours of the harsh weather conditions that Toowoomba is known for – not to mention that they also had to stand up to being battered by stray footballs from the nearby playing fields!

The Flexshield Product: Sonic 200 Series acoustic louvres

Flexshield Sonic Series acoustic louvres keep noise levels down without sacrificing ventilation.

This is important because, if a solid barrier acoustic screen is used to enclose mechanical equipment, it could cause the machinery to overheat by restricting airflow.

That is why Sonic Series acoustic louvres were perfect for the Wilsonton State High School installation. They allow for ventilation and all-weather protection while reducing noise levels.

The outer casings of the louvre blades and frames are powder coated or manufactured using pre-finished sheet metal. Additional features such as bird mesh, matching flashings, and steel support columns are also available.

The results

The installation of the acoustic louvre enclosure reduced noise transmission and decreased background noise distractions for teachers and students.

The Sonic Series acoustic louvres’ finish was selected to suit the building design’s colour scheme. Combined with the sleek louvre profile, the new louvre enclosure has helped to enhance the new buildings’ visual appeal.
